New sow farm with 2,200 sow places in Romania

Design and Construction

In 2023, a Romanian client approached Genugten Agri with the request to design and realize a completely new sow farm. After several meetings, Genugten Agri received the assignment in 2023 to initiate the entire process. The design was developed in collaboration with local partners, ensuring careful coordination of architecture and structural calculations.

After obtaining the building permit and finalizing the contracts, construction of the barns commenced in the summer of 2023, in collaboration with Avril SRL, Genugten Agri’s construction partner in Romania.

Innovative and Efficient Sow Farming

The new facility is expected to become the most modern sow farm in Romania, fully equipped with the latest technologies. Free-movement farrowing pens have been selected, incorporating individual feeding via Freeda electronic sow feeding. In addition, pregnant sows will be housed in large groups with Freeda selection stations and integrated weighing systems.

The farm will also feature its own boar barn and KI-laboratory, enabling on-site sperm production. This enhances biosecurity and ensures a reliable sperm supply, which is particularly crucial given the farm’s remote location.

Animal Welfare and Climate Control

For the piglet barn, a concrete underfloor heating system has been installed, ensuring a stable climate and improved animal welfare. Additionally, the concrete floor contributes to stronger leg development as the piglets grow.

All barns are equipped with ceiling ventilation via the Soft-Air ventilation ceiling. Incoming air is cooled using Genugten Agri Pad-Cooling, ensuring an optimal climate even during hot summer days.

Sustainable Air Treatment and Heating

Each of the three buildings includes a central air scrubber space, strategically placed in the concrete roof area. This setup allows for the easy integration of air scrubbers at a later stage.

In the pregnant sow barn, lamella heat exchangers from R&R Systems BV have been installed to utilize outgoing air as an energy source for the heat pump system. The farm is equipped with a 250 kW heat pump system, enabling sustainable heating. This system has been developed in close collaboration with R&R.

Lighting, Infrastructure, and Finishing

For an optimal working and living environment, the barns feature continuous skylights along the side walls, providing ample natural light. This not only benefits animal welfare but also creates a more pleasant workspace for employees.

The site is further equipped with concrete roads, fencing, and a concrete manure silo from Wolf System, ensuring efficient manure mixing. This enhances its utilization in arable farming.

Future-Proof Facility

With the completion of this fully equipped and future-proof farm, the Romanian client is ready to produce piglets for the Romanian market for the next 30 years.
